In the bustling temples of first-century Roman Egypt, worshipers had a habit of taking far more consecrated water than they had actually paid for. To curb this sacred petty theft, the brilliant engineer Hero of Alexandria designed a mechanical solution that predated modern snack dispensers by nearly two millennia.
Brass Coins and Counterweighted Levers
Hero's invention operated on a remarkably simple principle of balance and gravity. A visitor dropped a brass coin through a top slot, where it landed on a small pan attached to a hinged lever arm.
The weight of the coin tilted the lever, opening an internal valve that allowed holy water to flow out of a bronze spout. As the coin slid off the sloping pan into a catch basin below, the lever snapped back into place and cut off the supply instantly.
The Engineering Legacy of Hero of Alexandria
While Hero also experimented with early steam devices and automated puppet theaters, his coin-operated liquid dispenser remains the earliest known ancestor of automated retail. It proved that human nature, technological ingenuity, and the urge to automate transactions have remained unchanged for two thousand years.
