Where Box Dividers Are Useful
Dividers can turn an open box, drawer, tray, tote, or case into organized compartments sized for the items you need to store. Common uses include tool drawers, hardware organizers, craft supplies, parts bins, display cases, kitchen drawers, collections, and storage boxes.
Equal compartments are especially useful when you're storing groups of similar items and want a consistent layout rather than individually sizing every section.
Choosing a Divider Material
The best divider material depends on the container and what will be stored in it. Cardboard or foam board may be sufficient for lightweight organizers, while hardboard, plywood, acrylic, or plastic may be better for dividers that need greater durability.
Material thickness also matters. Thicker dividers may be stronger, but they take up more of the available interior space. For small compartments, even a relatively small change in divider thickness can noticeably change the usable space.
Single-Direction Dividers vs. a Grid
A single row of dividers works well when you simply need to separate a container into several equal sections. A grid creates compartments in both directions and can make better use of a larger drawer, tray, or box when many smaller storage spaces are needed.
Before cutting material, consider the objects that will actually go into the compartments. Equal divisions are convenient, but the resulting clear compartment dimensions still need to provide enough room for the items being stored.
Planning Before You Cut
If you're building several identical organizers, it can be worthwhile to make and test one complete divider layout first. This gives you a chance to check the fit inside the actual container and make any adjustments before cutting material for the remaining organizers.
For removable dividers, also consider how easily the pieces need to slide into place or be taken out later. A divider intended to be permanently glued in place may require a different fit than one designed to remain removable.
