Getting a Layout Properly Centered

Centering an object is more than simply finding the midpoint of a wall, board, panel, or opening. The width of the object also has to be considered. Once the object width is subtracted from the available width, the remaining space can be divided equally between the two sides. This gives you the position needed to create equal left and right margins.

Centering Multiple Objects

When several identical objects need to be arranged evenly, the available space must be divided between both outside margins and the spaces between the objects. This is useful for laying out signs, pictures, cabinet hardware, decorative panels, shelves, or other repeated items. Equal spacing can create a balanced layout without having to repeatedly adjust measurements by trial and error.

Working With Different Units

Real projects do not always use matching measurement units. You might know the width of a wall in feet but the width of a sign in inches, or have an opening measured in millimeters within a space measured in meters. Converting the measurements to compatible units before calculating prevents errors and allows the centering position to be determined accurately.

Centering Openings and Panels

The same basic centering method can be used for doors, windows, access openings, mounting plates, labels, decals, and other objects. However, the measured available width should represent the space you can actually use. Trim, framing, clearances, borders, and other obstructions may reduce the usable width and should be accounted for before marking the final position.

Check Your Measurements Before Installation

A calculated position is only as accurate as the measurements used to produce it. After marking the location, measure the distance from both sides of the object or opening to the reference edges. The two measurements should match when the item is centered. This final check can help catch measuring or marking errors before drilling holes, cutting material, or permanently fastening anything in place.
