Choosing the Right Drill Bit Size

The correct drill bit size depends on what the hole will be used for. A pilot hole for a wood screw, a clearance hole for a bolt or machine screw, and a tap-drill hole for cutting threads all serve different purposes and may require different bit sizes.

Pilot Holes for Wood Screws

A pilot hole helps guide a wood screw and reduces the chance of splitting the material. Hardwood generally requires a slightly larger pilot hole than softwood because it is denser and provides more resistance to the screw.

The ideal size can also vary with the screw design, wood species, and how close the hole is to the edge of the material, so testing on scrap wood is useful when possible.

Tap Drill vs. Clearance Hole

A tap-drill hole is drilled before internal threads are cut with a tap. It must be smaller than the outside diameter of the fastener so enough material remains to form the threads.

A clearance hole serves a different purpose. It allows the screw or bolt to pass through the material without its threads engaging the hole. This is commonly used when one piece needs to be pulled tightly against another.

Metric Thread Pitch Matters

Metric fasteners with the same nominal diameter do not necessarily have the same thread pitch. For example, M10 fasteners can use several different pitches, and each may require a different tap-drill size.

Always identify both the nominal diameter and thread pitch before choosing a tap drill.

Common Uses

Drill bit sizing is useful for woodworking, furniture assembly, automotive work, machinery repair, metal fabrication, threaded-hole preparation, and general DIY projects.

When accuracy matters, confirm the fastener size and thread pitch before drilling and compare the recommendation with the tap, screw, or equipment manufacturer's specifications.
