Planning a Better Fit

Knowing whether something technically fits is useful, but the way objects are arranged can make a big difference. Rotating an object may allow another row, column, or layer to fit into the available space.

This calculator can test different rectangular orientations to find the arrangement that holds the greatest number of identical objects. In 3D mode, it can test all six possible uniform orientations.

2D vs. 3D Calculations

Use a 2D calculation when you only need to know how many objects fit across a flat rectangular area, such as a shelf, floor, pallet, tabletop, or truck bed.

Add height measurements for a 3D calculation when objects will be stacked inside a box, cabinet, storage area, trailer, or other enclosed space.

Allow for Real-World Clearance

Exact measurements do not always mean an exact real-world fit. Boxes can bulge, shelves can have lips, containers can have handles or hardware, and objects may need room to be inserted or removed.

When necessary, reduce the available dimensions slightly or increase the object's dimensions to provide a practical clearance allowance.

Common Uses

The calculator can help with storage planning, shelving, moving boxes, warehouse layouts, pallets, drawers, closets, truck beds, trailers, shipping containers, cabinets, and other situations where you need to estimate how many identical rectangular objects will fit into a rectangular space.

Important Limitation

The calculator arranges objects in straight rows, columns, and layers using one orientation at a time. It does not mix orientations within the same layout or attempt irregular packing patterns.
